EGMONT RACES,

The Egmont meeting commenced today. There was fine weather, and a good attendance. The results were :
Railway Handicap : Chasseur 1, Faugh-a-ballagh 2, Motoroa 3. l’awara and Governess were scratched. Impati got away well, but later was supplanted by Chasseur and Faugh-a-ballagh, who headed affairs till the straight was entered. Here Chasseur drew away, and won comfortably by a length and a-half. Time 1,18, div. £3 11s 6d.
First Hack Hurdles ; Old Gun 1, Great Scott 2, Taranaki 3. Romany Lad and Tukuranga were scratched, Old Gun and Great Scott were in goodpositions throughout, and the issue lay between them. After a set-to in the straight Old Gun settled Great Scott’s pretensions, and won with a bit in hand by half a length. Fencing throughout was faulty, and at the second jump from home Moreen came a cropper, the rider escaping with a shaking. Time 2.59, divs. £3 9s and £1 17s.
Tawhiti Handicap: Sandy 1, Modora 2, Kecoil 3. Consistent and Flying Shell were scratched. Sandy was away first, but drew back, allowing Recoil to take the lead, which position tho Foulshot gelding held till well in the straight, when Sandy came away and won easily by two lengths. Time 1.18 1-5, tote 811, divs. £1 19s 6d and £2 2s.
Hawera Cup : Bowman 1, Crusoe 2, Loch Erin 3. Impati mado most of the running, being closely followed by Blackwing, Marianthus, and Loch Erin. At the mile Bowman closed up, and Crusoe, who had been lying some distance in the rear, improved his position, lietoie entering the straight Bowman had wrested the load from Impati, and Crusoe had got within striking distauce. Bowman, however, had a bit in hand, and won by a length. Timo 2.11 1-5, tote 993, £2 17s and XI Os 6d.
Waihi Handicap : Dick Turpin 1, Rita 2, Flying Jib 3. Itedan led for some time, with Dick Turpin and Omprah handy. Before the straight was reached Dick Turpin went away, and increasing his lead with every stride, won by seven or eight lengths, hard held. Time 1.48, tote 738, divs. £45 5s 6d and 18s.
Mokia Handicap : Cave 1, King Edward 2, Ontario 3. Scratched: Fair Jess and Punui. King Edward and Flying Shell kept well forward till rounding the home turn, when Cave and Ontario engaged King Edward, and the former, lasting longest, won by half a-length. Time 2.1 1-5; on totalisator 748; div. £2 2s 6d. Telegraph Handicap: Laertes 1, Armadillo 2, Mazona 3. All started. Siandra raised his backers’ hopes for a brief period, but when it came to solid work there was nothing in it but the placed ones, Laertes winning by half-a-length, Armadillo a short neck in front of Mazona. Time 1.4 ;on totalisator92l ; divs., £lO 7s and XI 8s 6d.
The amount put through the machine was £'5749, as compared with £5223 for the first day’s racing last year.
