London, May 6. The papers comment on the poor batting and lack of coolness of the Australians, though it is absurd to judge, in view of yesterday's conditions. The new men failed, Dull shaping best. Darling arid Gregory, whose cutting was perfect, took the honors in batting, and Noble in bowling. Saunders was keenly watched, and it is alleged that at least one ball was suspicious. Trumble's thumb is had, and requires rest. When play was resumed, threatening weather prevailed. The attendance was small.
Fry was still 20 when Wood wassiuartly stumped by Kelly oil' Howell’s first over. Three for 42. Play was then stopped by the rain for twenty minutes.
On resuming, Fry had added 11, when Noble got him with a fine break back. Four for 54. He gave one chance high to Darling at point when he had 20 to his credit. Braund and Jessop made things lively, both hitting hard all round the wickets, 27 resulting otf Noble’s two overs. Braund hit four fourers off Noble in one over. Braund when 15 returned a hot chance to Howell. Jessop was easily stumped by Kelly. He knocked up ten oil Saunders’ first over. Five for 145. Showers again threatened to stop play. Murdoch, in trying a hit, was bowled by Saunders. Six for 161. Smith added a single, when he was caught in the slips off Howell. Seven for 162. Braund was scoring slowly. Llewellyn was quickly disposed of. Eight for 178. The Somerset bowler v;as again aggressive, but Vine gave an easy catch at midoff to Darling. Nine for 225. Board was the last man. After lunch Noble replaced Saunders. Fifteen wero hit off Hopkins’ first over. Braund was caught and bowled by Noble after a very fine innings, lasting 125 minutes. He was much cheered. Trumper and Duff commenced the Australians’ second innings, but the latter only scored a single before he was bowled. Hill had scored 7, when ho jumped out to drive Llewellyn, and was clean bowled. Two for 16. Gregory then added a couple, when he played ono on. Three for 23. Darling'joined Trumper, and play became vigorous, lluns came fast by fine hitting. Braund replaced Vine at 6 o’clock, but the hitting continued. With the score at 96, play was stopped owing to the bad light. Throe wickets for 96, Trumper not out 58.
Play was resumed after fifteen minutes' delay. Trumper added 6to his score, and was then easily stumped by Board off Braund. Four for 103. Noble partnered Darling, who drove Braund out of the ground for six. Noblo had a short stay. After making 4, he got out leg-before to Llewellyn. With the assistance of Armstrong, Darling carried his score to 92, and then drove Grace deep to cover-point, Vine accepting the catch. He played a splendid innings, occupying 100 minutes, and showed su,.erb driving. Six for 200. Armstrong quickly followed, being caught by Wood at deep squaro leg.
