THE WOOL SALES,

The wool sales«opened strong, with an irregular advance of five to ten per cent. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 4,365,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,660,000. Bank shares : Union 39, New Zealand 100 i, other unchanged. London, May 7.
Buxton, Balme, and Jacombs’ joint catalogue consisted of 22.561 bales, a good selection of crossbreds and fair selection
of Meriaos. There was a large attendance, and keen competition in all quarters. Everything advanced irregularly. Compared with the March closing rates Merinos were five to seven and a half per cent., and crossbreds five to ten per cent, dearer.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have advised their Gisborne agents as follows in reference to the wool sales “ The sales opened with an average advance of ten per cent, on last sales’ closing rates for crossbreds and 7,i r per cent, for Merinos. Competition by both Home and foreign buyers is active.”
