PERSONAL.
At the citizens' meeting last evening tho Eev. Father O’Connor spoke very strongly upon the question of tho apathy of our public men. He was greatly impressed with the productiveness of the district, and believed that if it wero anywhere else it would be ten times more prosperous. He thought that it was high time the citizens of Gisborne were aroused from the state of lethargy into which they had lapsed. And so say all of us. Mr W. D. S. McDonald, of Tokomaru, is at present visiting Gisborne. The Bev. W. Gillies, of Timaru, will occupy the pulpit at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday week. Miss Connie Buttel, of the Pollard Opera Company, has a sistor who was tho ohampion lady swimmer of Australasia. Mr W. F. Hale, of Tolago Bay, is at prosont in town. ' Mr R. Raxoudell, travelling representative of tho Auckland firm of Messrs Bycroft and Co., is at present in Gisborne. Mr G. Darton displayed a keen sonse of humor at the meeting of citizens last evening, when ho suggested that Gisborne’s four dankers should be placed ou the Finance Committee.
