CABLE CHARGES.
STATEMENT OF THE ARGUS,

The Argus says that the Federal Ministry, in spite of the decision of Ne\V"Zea-c land, is taking advantage of its powers to compel the public to pay the old rate for messages over the Eastern Extension Company’s cables to New Zealand, in order to divert business to the Pacific cable.
By Telegroph—Press Association. Wakapuaka, last night. With reference to tho statement of the Melbourno Argus, contained in to-day’s press messages, Mr Browning, Superintendent of tho Eastern Extension Cable Company, was advised from Melbourne to-night by the company’s general manager in Australia that the question of terminal charges on cable messages to and from New Zealand has been finally settled, and that the Commonwealth PostmasterGeneral has agreed to charge the same terminal rates on messages passing over both tho Eastern Extension and the Pacific cables. Thero'now being no differentiation in rates, it is leit to the telegraphing public to chooso the line over which their messages shall be transmitted.
