The Judge directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty, on the ground that there was no direct evidence that the Chinaman was actually dead. Piera was subsequently found guilty of stealing ,£4O from the residence of Wun. The Judge, in sentencing prisoner to seven years’ penal servitude, said that one who had listened to the details of the previous case could not have any moral doubt that the prisoner in the dock was the murderer.
