The Lyttelton Harbor Board to-day discussed a motion to obtain export opinion as to how further suitable accommodation can be made- at the port, and the possibilities of making another harbor at Sumner. The last-named proposal was struck out, and the Harbor Improvement Committee were authorised to take steps with regard to expert opinion on improvements at Lyttelton. Wellington, last night. Under the altered scale of fares and rates fin the Government railways Now Zealand-grown fruit and vegetables will be carried any distance at sixpence for 561 bor portion thereof. Game and fish will be carried for sixpence for the first seven pounds, and at a shilling for fourteen pounds. Hokitika, last night. A largely-attended public meeting was held at the Town Hall this evening to take the necessary steps to recognise the eminent services rendered by Mr H. L. Michell as Mayor of the town for seven years, captain of the Fire Brigade for 18 years, and in many other public positions. It was decided to make a public presentation at the installation ceremony of an illuminated address and handsome .silver plate. Palmerston North, last night. Sergt.-Major Ramsay retires from the police force to-day, on pension, after 40 years’-service.
