Melbourne, April 26v Tho Marine Court suspended for six months the certificate of Captain Medley in connection with the recent stranding of the steamer Paroo.
The troopship St. Andrews, from tho Cape, brought 150 members of the Vic* toriau Fifth Contingent. At the invitation of Mr David Mills, one hundred gentlemen lunched on the Mokoia to meet Mr Jas. Mills.
Mr Barton has received from the Colonial Office letters patent containing terms of taking over by the Commonwealth the administration of New Guinea. In the Senate Mr O’Connor stated that the new expenditure actually caused by Federation was .£228,374, or 14d per head of the population. The announcement that a sinking fund would bo attached to all Commonwealth loans was greeted with applause.
