As the result of a conference between Dr Mason and the local health authorities, it ‘is understood that several areas are to be pointed out that one hospital for infectious disease will serve. This is done to enable the removal of the plague hospital from the domain, against which there has been strong public protest. WAIPAWA, last night.

WAKAPUAKA, last night. Mr Browning, superintendent of the Eastern Extension Cable Company, this morning w red to Mr Gray, Secretary of the Telegraph Department, Wellington, congratulating the Department upon the opening of the Pacific cable for traffic. The message was so marked that it travelled from Wakapuaka to La Perouse, thence to Sydney and Southport, Queensland. At the latter station it was transmitted on to the Pacific cable at Doubtless Bay, whence it was sent on the New Zealand lines to Wellington.

WESTPORT, last night, D. J. Williams’ store at Wamangarui near Westport, was burnt down early this morning.

DUNEDIN., last night, A lire broke out at Pine Hill, Dunedin, at 5 o’clock this morning, on the farm belonging to W. and J. Woods, and destroyed all tiie outhouses and several animals and much stock. The damage is estimated at £SOOO. The insurances are : New Zealand £2OO, National £250. At Port Chalmers early this morning a fire broke out in the shop of Craig, tobacconist, George street, and two other buildings also caught fire. Craig’s stock was consumed and the fixtures damaged. J. S. Campbell, fruiterer, had his stock and fixtures considerably damaged, also Page s stock was more or less damaged, 'lhe buildings are owned by W. Anderson, Dunedin, and insured in the New Zealand office, the amount at present being unknown. Geddes, a jeweller, in the premises, lias a £3O policy, Craig £l5O, both in the New Zealand office ; Campbell a £2OO policy in the United Insurance. Messrs Christophers and Smith have forwarded a reply to the Minister s demand for an explanation of their action as Justices. It is anticipated a dismissal from the Commission w ill follow. The" Supreme Court is engaged on the divorce suit of William Henry Gore, of Wangatuni, brickmaker, who sues for a divorce from his wife on the ground of misconduct with John Stewart, a laborer. The latter is unrepresented. Mr Solomon appears for petitioner, and Mr Barclay ior respondent.
