April 23.—1 t lias been discovered ■that Russia is building a -railway, leaving the Siberian line seventy wiles west of Khailar to Kaigin, within one hundred miles of Pekin. A German consignment of comforts sent to Bloemfontein refugees was found to consist largely of filthy, unwashed, left-off clothing. Eight ladies unpacking it were made seriously ill. TELEGRAPHY, Lord Kelvin, President of the Royal Society, at Edinburgh, addressing the American Institute of Electrical Engineers at New York, predicted that sub-' marine telegraphy would continue useful after wireless telegraphy was a commercial success. THE BARBICAN FIRE.
The estimates of the damage by the Barbican lire have been largely reduced. GANG OF SWINDLERS. The police arrested Darcy Middleton, Charles Forrester, Edward Lovelock, and John Cassels, alleged members of a gang of twelve swindlers, well-known in Sydney and Adelaide, and they were charged at Westminster Court with' keeping a Hat at Buckingham Gate for the purpose of gambling. They were remanded. PARIS. April 23.—At Russia’s instigation, the Paris police searched the residence of fifteen Russian students, and found correspondence relating to M. Sipiaguinc’s assassination. Probably the students will be extradited from France.
