AGREEMENT WITH AUSTRALIA.

UNIVERSAL CABLE RATE.

(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, last night

The Federal Government have agreed to deliver New Zealand penny letters in Australia, ibis colony having agreed to a bali'-peniiv terminal rate on cables. The result will be a universal cable rate of ltd per word to all parts of Australia (not Tasmania), instead of the present differential rale of 5d to gd. The new rate as to letters does not take effect till the Ordcr-in-Coun-cil is gazetted. INVERCARGILL, last night.

The Acting Premier has received the following wire from Mr Drake, Federal Postmaster-General “ I accept your proposal for a New Zealand-half-penny terminal rate for Australian traffic by the Pacific cable, and agree to accept your letters prepaid at a penny rate, Government having agreed to accept Kite)) • letters front all parts ol the British Empire.” ’ Sir Joseph Ward wired in reply f heartily congratulate you .upon the decision t<> admit letters at the penny rate from New Zealand, and all parts of the Empire, into tile Australian Commonwealth. It is a great postal movement in a forward direction, and will give universal satisfaction to all eotml-rics affected. The half-penny terminal rates will be gazetted for New Zealand terminal l&M at once,”

The Acting-Premier, Sir .Joseph Ward, telegraphed as followed yesterday to the editor of the Gisborne Times “ Very pleased to be able to inform you that in response to representations made by me the Federal Government of Australia have to-day agreed to allow Mew Zealand letters to be admitted to the Commonwealth, at the penny rate. This news, I am sure, will be received by you with satisfaction, as Australia was the only British country which so far had refused to agree to New Zealand penny postage,”
