An Old Man’s Death.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. It has been reported to the police that the body of John Broughton, 73 years of age, was found in the Whau Creek. On examination a cut was found on the throat, and also on the breast, which might have been caused by the point of a pocket knife. Deceased was an old age pensioner. He was last seen alive on Saturday night at his home. The constable reports that on the previous night deceased’s wife Saw deceased at home, bleeding from a neck wound, which deceased stated was self-inflicted. On the same night deceased showed his wife a wound on the breast which he stated was caused by himself. Later.—At the inquest the Coroner left it to the jury to say whether the evidence supported the theory that deceased had taken hfs own life. The jury returned a verdict of death from drowning, but that the evidence was not sufficient evidence to enable them to determine by what means deceased came into the water. The Coroner expressed concurrence with the verdict.
