WESTPORT HARBOR BOARD

At the monthly meeting of the Westport Harbor Board to-day it was resolved that the Board approach the Government with a view to obtaining control of the Ngakawau coal lease, and that if this is granted a proposition of the amount authorised to bo expended by the Board under the Act of 1901 be spent in prospecting, and that a boring plant approved by tho Board be obtained as soon as possible. Mr McKenzie said that there was q, splendid seam of coal at Ngakawau; some years ago he tendered to supply the plant for £22,000, and be believed be left a good margin then. The Board also authorised its engineer to prepare plans and specifications with detailed estimates of the cost of construction of a floating basin on the east side of the river, such basin to be designed to provide berthage for at least six steamers of 5000 tons, and to be so designed as to be capable of future economical enlargement to the greatest extent that the ground available will admit of.
