WANGANUI SUPREME COURT. A CLEVER SCAMP.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, last night. - At tho District Court to-day Alex. Ratter Hart, charged with threatening to break into a dwelling at Foxton, was sentenced to ono month’s imprisonment. A Maori named Oteno Pomaro was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for obtaining a suit of clothes by false pretences. Accused had had a record, having served several sentences for obtaining money by false pretences. Some time ago ho represented himself to Bishop Neville as a Maori missionary, and endeavored to obtain money to pay his way so that he might preach to prisoners in gaol. In the course of the trial to-day acoused stated that he had asked the gaoler to send a telegram for him, but the latter had refused. The gaolor said that he had no authority to send telegrams for prisoners if they had not the money to pay therefor. The jury added the following rider to the verdict, “The jury recommend that in cases where a prisoner awaiting trial has no friends, the gaol authorities should be empowered to frank telegrams as well as letters should this be necessary for his defence."
