AWANUI ROBBERY.
ARREST OP TWO NATIVES,
At a late hour last evening information reached us from Awanui that two arrests had beea made by Constable Kelly and the native Constables Taare te Rata and Ahipene Puku, in connection with the recent robbery at Mr Kirk’s store. The names of the natives arrested are Peke Maunga and Nopera Wbakarara, and both men are at present in the Tuparoa lockup. The accused are charged with having broken into the premises of Mr Kirk’s store, and removed a safe from which the sum ot sixty or seventy pounds is said to have been stolen. Early yesterday afternoon Constable Kelly and Mi Kirk left Awanui for Tuparoa, the latter accompanying the constable for the purpose of identifying the accused. One of the prisoners is reported to have cashed one of the stolen cheqnes, and it is by this means that their arrest was brought about. Detective Dixon left town for Tolago last night, and to-day will go on to Tuparoa. It is understood that the accused will be taken to Awanui to-day or t'o-morrow, where they will appear before two Justices.
