Otago Education Board.

AT VARIANCE WITH TIIE GOVERNMENT •-

“SLAPS IN THE FACE.”

By telegraph—Press Association— DUNEDIN, last night. The Education Board has received a reply from tire Education Department, stating that the Government does not see its way to adopt- the suggestion to hold an inquiry in regard to the causes of the recent outbreak of tuberculosis at. Kurow school, that the best course to pursue is for the Board to see that proper provision is made for the ventilation of the building, and such other alterations as are considered necessary by the sanitary authorities, The letter was received. The Board decided to grant assistance in some cases in districts out- of reach o. roads by giving £5 for each child jn which the parents had at their own expense employed teachers. Much indignation was expressed at what was called the “ slap in the face ” admin ■ istered over the selection of teachers for South Africa. The Board had selected four teachers qualified ir. every way, but for reasons of its own

the Government had only selected one of those. One selected by the Government did not- get a single vote, as she was not. considered up to the standard. Another was selected who had never been in the service of the Board

at all, and had no experience of Jarge classes.

I.t was resolved that the Board, after carefully considering the whole question, and the slight put on it by the Government in practically ignoring its carefully considered recommendations, declines to enter into any further correspondence in connection with the matter, and declines the Minister’s request for leave of absence.
