MATAWHERO SCHOOL.
COMPLAINTS .WITH REGARD .TO CANING OF PUPILS. (Special to Times). NAPIJCR, last, nigUL At the meeting ol the Board ot Education to-day, a complaint was received, accompanied by evidence taken at an enquiry, that the head master of the Matawhero school had treated certain pupils with undue harshness.. In one case it was alleged that a girl for speaking to another at drill received six cuts on each hand. Another complaint was that a boy, also for a trifling fault at, drill, had been struck about the head by the teacher with his hand. It was resolved : “ That the Board is most reluctant to interfere with the question of discipline in schools, as it is one of the most important factors in school keeping, but at the same time they have always required it to he exercised without undue severity, or to the hurt of the children. In'the present case the Board consider according to the evidence, and not contested, that .Mr Marshall acted without sufficient judgment or care, and request him to so conduct this- part of his work as to retain the confidence of the Committee in this as he does jii other matters.”
