FIRE ON S.S. TAKAPUNA.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. A fire was discovered in the after hold of the Union Company’s steamer Takapuna at 1.30 this morning, when the vessel was between New Plymouth and Onehunga. Water was poured in and the fire extinguished, very little damage being done::. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The damage by lire on the Takapuna is confined to a few cases being charred. There was some baggage in the hold, but it was not damaged. It is supposed a steam pipe ignited the yvood-work.
WAIROA’S INDIGNATION
(Per Press Association.) WAIROA, yesterday. The Town Board meeting last night resolved to communicate with the Postmaster-General, drawing attention to the proposed unsightly addition to the Wairoa post office. The Board considers it a disgrace to the Government to allow an eight foot Jean-to abutting on the street, and claims that the importance ol the district demands something better in the way of a post office, which, even with .the additions proposed, would be disgraceful and inconvenient to a degree. It was stated that the Inspector of Nuisances considers the building insanitary. The resolution passed calls on the Government not to accept the tenders, closing on the 7th inst. .
PRESENTATION TO MR SEDDON
(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, last night. The presentation of addresses from the old age, pensioners of Auckland district to Mr and Mrs Seddon, and a diamond ring to Miss Seddon, took place last night. The Hon. Mr Cadman introduced the deputation, and as an old colleague attested to the Premier’s arduous trials in the interest of old age pensioners, notably in sticking to the Committee table of the Plouse of Representatives for seven days and seven nights, wearing down the opposition to the Bill. Mr Seddon, replying, said the thanks of the community for the pensions legislation was due not to himself alone, but to all who had supported the Bill. With reference to the demand for increased pensions, he sipd anyope who advo, cated, that course was an enemy to old age pensions, for such an extension would make the scheme too burdensome, and it would break down.
