THE TOTALISATOR.

ITS SUPPRESSION DESIRED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. The Council of Churches has resolved to petition Parliament for the suppression of the totalisator. The petition, which will be sent to all parts of the colony for signature, 30 that it shall be a national one, states that gambling is widely prevalent, and manifestly on the increase; that it is demoralising in practice to the individual, and baneful to the best interest of the community ; that the totalisator, so far from lessening the evil as designed, has increased the gambling spirit, has added to the number ofjrace meetings, and has induced people of all ages and both sexes to indulge in gambling with the sanction of the legislature. In view of the above evil results it is asked that the totalisator be entirely suppressed.
