The Seventh Contingent.

Colonel Porter, of the Seventh Contingent, in a cable message to the Premier that left Capetown on March 18th, says :

“ The contingent have been engaged in excessive drives in Orange Colony. The strain on tho men is hard and continuous. The regiment captured De Wet’s guns and received thanks. On the 24th, with bravery and gallantry, they repulsed a large force of the enemy in a midnight attack. They were specially paraded and thanked by Lord Kitchener.

The casualties during the month was killed 26, wounded 42, died 3, total 71. The captures were prisoners 15, guns one 15 pounder and two pom-poms, with 2900 rounds of ammunition and fuses, 28 rifles, 1400 rounds of ammunition, horses and mules and saddlery 100, oxen and cattle 4500, sheep 500. A large number of waggons and carts were also captured and destroyed. The healtlj of the regiment is generally good. In another message sent from Heilbron on March 14th, Colonel Portal* reports having returned from a drive in which he met with not much opposition; and there were no casualties. The regiment is well, and it is reported that the wounded are all progressing well. The strength of the regiment in the field is too low. All are well.
