PORT OF DEPARTURE FOR
CONTINGENT.

Mr Seddon, when passing through to Auckland to night, was interviewed hero by a deputation to ask that a portion of the Tenth Contingent to be equipped and despatched have their final port of departure from here. The Mayor, Mr Dockrill, who acted as spokesman, referred to the great interest taken by Taranaki in former contingents,especially
in the last two, having ottered fifteen to each one allotted as its share in the Eighth and twelve to one for the Ninth. Tara
naki also had the best commanding officer (Colonel Davis), and other officers and men who had distinguished them selves.
Mr Seddon, in replying said that he would place the matter before Genr-al Babbingtou, who was going north with him. He added that had the harbor
facilities bc-en such that a troopship could lie alongside, New Plymouth would be suitable from its central position for the despatch of one contingent. He would see what could be done. ESCAPEES.
Two prisoners escaped from the local gaol to day, but one, Thurston, was recaptured immediately. The other, Roderick McDonald, a former escapee from Wanganui, is still at large. The police are searching for him.
