“Taceiolo,” a new antiseptic discovered by Professor Paterno, has been described before t.bo Academy of Medicine at Home as being far superior to sublimate of mercury in its eflicaey. Cabbage is an old cure for drunkenness. The Egyptians ate it boiled before their other food if they intended to drink wine after dinner, and some of the remedies sold as a preventive of intoxication on the Continent are said to contain cabbage seed. For a number of years the largest ships using the Suez Canal have sailed under the German flag : further, Germany has,
on the average, larger ships than England, •for, while the average size of the German vessels is 4431 registered tons, the average
size of British vessels is only 4106 tons. Twenty years ago only fifteen German vessels passed the Canai, but now the number has reached 462. The Rev. Miss Edwards, who officiated at the funeral of one of the oldest men in
her congregation, has for two years nowacted as minister of a Bible Christian Chapel at Falmouth. For the first time in the history of Indiana a negro has succeeded in claiming to be tried by a jury of negroes. The ease arose out of a burglary at a negro’s bouse at Shelbyville by another negro. The prisoner when apprehended was nearly beaten to death.
The average duration of marriages in England is twenty-eight years, Russia, with thirty years, is the only country to beat her. Id France and Germany twenty-six years is the average duration. Longholm, the little market town of Dumfrieshire, has the distinction of being perhaps the only town in thekingdom—certainly one of very few—-without a public debt.' The town treasurer is happy with ■ a balance of some hundreds of pounds. Boy bridegrooms are growing in number in London. There are four under twenty one in every 100 bridegrooms. About sixteen girls under twenty-one per 100 get married. In the event of the Government imposing a tax on corn, it has been arranged to call a conference representative of all the trades in the United Kingdom to protest against the imposition of such a duty.
