TOLAGO BAY.
(Special to Times.) Tolago Bay, Sunday,
The carnival on the Coast commences on Monday, with the annual races at Tolago Bay. There is a great crowd here at present. The hotel accommodation is taxed to the uttermost, while 20 or 80 people from Gisborne are staying at Pakarae for the night, aud come on here in the morning. Amongst the Gisbornites at present up here is Mr Sinclair (of the Masonic Stables), who chartered the river launch to-day, and took a large party up the river, a very pleasant day being spent. The Gisborne cricketers did not arrive here until one on Saturday. They had an exciting experience at the Tapuwai rocks. It was datk at the time, and the vehicle got swamped with the sea. The occupants had to get out, take the horses from the vehicle and drag it out. “ Out on the rocks when the tide comes in ” is now' the team’s favorite song. The team had rather a warm time up here, the local men giving the townsmen plenty of leather hunting. Play was commenced at 1.80 o’clock. Tolago made 124 in their first innings; Huddlestone (not out) 26, J. Morris 15, W. Reeves 18, Spence 10. Gisborne in their first innings made 56; D. Porter 18, W. McCredie 16, J. Gibson 10.
Among the visitors at Tolago are Sergeant Sidaells and Detective Nixon.
The starter for the races to morrow is Mr Boland.
