Band Contest.

At the Band Contest the E Flat Horn Solos resulted : McKersey (Dunedin Navals), 79, 1 ; McNeil (Kaikorai), 78, 2 j Walmsley (Wellington Garrison), 76, 3 ; Mellor (Waihi), 75, 4. Eighteen competed. It appears impossible to finish the programme before Saturday night. Thero are immense crowds in town for the marching competition to-day. A great financial success is assured. Later.—One of the principal competitions at the Band Contest eventuated this afternoon, namely the marching contest. There was the largest gathering in the Recreation Grounds ever known, about seven thousand. The gate money i amounted to ,£270. Thirteen bands competed. The results were as follows, showing the points awarded under the > heads in the order named—instruments, general appearance, dressing, and intervals, march to point, cadence, paces, counter marching, dressing, interval on march, and music : Wanganui, 10, 9,9, 9,8, 8, 18, 18—88 ; music, 75 ; total, 164. Palmerston, 9,7, 5,6, 10, 8, 14, 16— 75 ; music, 66 ; total, 141. Denniston, 8,9, 7,7, 8,2, 14, 16—71 ; music, 69 ; total, 140. Taranaki Garrison, 9,8, 6,8, 6,0, 18, 17—72 ; music, 68 ; total, 140. The marching of all the bands called forth loud praise, and was considered by a competent military authority to be a great advance on previous efforts, the smartness of several in executing the movements being greatly praised. The first test selections, finished after midnight on Wednesday, attracted a crowded house. No results will be available till after the second tests to-morrow night.
