NORTH ISLAND BATTALION

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. This morning three squadrons oi tho North Island Battalion of the Ninth Contingent were given a good course of mounted drill in extouded ordor. One - squadron was kept in camp, and exercised in mounted work.

\ T esterday afternoon tho officers and men recoived thirty days’ pay in advance, at Imperial rates. Captain Coyle, 11. E., paid the troops on behalf of the Government. It is reported that Captain O’Brien is to have command of tho Senior Squadron, “E" Battalion Auckland City Squadron ; that Captain C. Bockctt, of Opotiki, is to have command of “F ” Squadron, and Captain Henderson, of Hokiauga, of “ G ” Squadron. Lieutenant Ilandyside, of Wellington, has arrived in camp, and has takon up the duties of paymaster. The men nro moving in tho direction of obtaining brass band instruments for tho Contingent Band on tho voyage. Each man is subscribing 5s towards the cost of the instruments.

Captain O’Brien, of the Ninth Contingent, was presented by the “ A ” Battery, his old corps, with field glasses of tho host make. Captain O’Brien is to receive lifs majority before tho contingent sails, and a loug-servico medal from the hands of General Babington.
