ST. PATRICK’S SOCIAL.
St. Patrick's social is always looked upon as one of the most successful functions of the kind held in Gisborne during the year, and the gathering in the Theatre Royal last evening was in every way up to the standard of .those previously held. A strong committee was formed some weeks ago to make all arrangements for the social, and the success of their efforts was demonstrated by the bright and happy gathering that assembled within the walls of the theatre. Nothing was omitted that would in the slightest degree tend towards forwarding the success of the social, and each momber of tho committee worked with a will towards that end. The interior of the hall presented a bright and attractive appearance, and a glance round the ballroom was sufficient to convince one that that the decoration committeee had done their work well. This is not to be wondered at when it is stated that tho decorations were carried out under supervision of Miss Neill, who is quite an expert in regard to this work. She was assisted by Messrs Martin, Quinn, Garmen, and Devitt, all of whom displayed plenty of energy and enthusiasm. The supper is always one important feature at any gathering, and the ladies who had charge of affairs saw that nothing was wanting on that score. The following ladies formed the commitee : Mesdames Maynard, Maher, King, Orr, Sweet, Jennings, Dooling, Muldoon, Martin (2), Barry, Hood, Fitzgerald, Dower, Moore, Currie, Misses Buchanan (2), Lopdill, Hayes, Muldoon (2), Jennings, O’Keefe, Blain, McConville, Green, Neill, and McCabe. The following gentlemen also assisted in many ways :—Messrs G. Maher, Martin (3), J. R. Quinn, Gush, Muldoon, Garmen, Mollroy, Doyle, Wall, Devitt, Kenealy, Griffin, Williams, Peterson, Thomas, and Webb. The music was excellent, being provided by the Italian string band, whilst extras were played by Misses Buchanan and Barry, and Mr Aston. During the evening Mr W. Melville sang “ Because I Love You ” in a most successful manner, and in response to an encore gave 11 Whilst the Dance Goes On,” both numbers being much appreciated. A word of praise is specially due to the President of the Ladies’ Committee, Mrs Maynard, and the Honorary Secretary, Miss McCabe, for the manner in which they worked, the great success of the social being in no small measure due to their efforts. From every point of view the gathering was a most pleasant one, and the result financially is expected to be highly satisfactory.
