AMERICAN COMPETITION,
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wellington, last night.
Furtlicr proof of the inroads the Americans are making upon the boot trade in this colony is disclosed by the fact that a steamer which arrived at Wellington a few days ago from New York brought amongst the cargo no fewer than five hundred cases of boots and shoes for the New Zealand market. This department of industry is apparently not the only one in which the Americans are seeking to outrival British manufactures, for it is now becoming evident that the quantity of American wall-paper imported to this country is rapidly increasing. The Minister for Public Works has received a letter from the manager of the Manawatu Railway Company, stating that counsol has advised the directors that the Act last session is insufficient to protect shareholders from liability with respect to uncalled capital. The directors therefore cannot advise the shareholders to proceed under the Act for the sale of the lino to Government. THE MAIL.
The San Francisco mail, which left Auckland by the Ventura on the 22nd February, arrived at ’Frisco on the 12th inst., at 7 a.m., nearly two days late.
