A Publican’s Appeal.

(By Telegraph-Press Association.) Ashburton, last night. At the District Court to-day Judge Ward heard the appeal of Whitaker, licensee of tho Royal Hotel, against the decision of the Magistrate, who fined him £5 Is for allowing liquor to be consumed on his premises at a Masonic banquet. Appellaut o.::itted to get a permit, and timling the banquet was later than expected gave the liquor free. The Judge said it was a hard- ease, as the licensee was evidently ignorant of the law. The guests were not tho licensee’s guests. Tho appeal was dismissed, with £5 5s costs.
