A RISE IN SOUTHERN MEAT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, March 9. Silver is at 2s Id. Copper, spot and three months, 54=5. Frozen meat.—Canterbury and Dunedin mutton has advanced one sixteenth of a penny ; New Zealand beef, fair averago quality, ox fores, has advanced one eighth ; ox hides havo declined a farthing. The rest are unchanged. These prices are tho official quotations furnished by tho Frozen Meat Trade Association. The basis of tho quotations is the sales of linos of not less than 100 carcases of mutton or lamb or 25 quarters of beef. All quotations for mutton are for fair average quality. Wellington, last night.

The Agent General wired to tho Agricultural Department as follows, under date March Bth: —“The mutton market is firm, and has a better turn this week. Very few prime carcases of mutton havo been marketed iately. The averago price to day for Canterbury is 3 jd, Canterbury, Southland, and Wellington Meat Export Compauy 3jd, other North Island brands 3',-d. There is a better demand for lamb. The shipments of River Plato lamb are on tho increase. Tho average prico to-day is: Canterbury brand s.[d, other than Canterbury s]d. The beef market is quiet. New Zealand hinds are at 4jd, fores 3Jd. Butter is dull at 110 s. Tho cheese market is very firm at 51s. Hemp is dull at £3B. Reports from Manila indicate that heavy shipments of hemp are expected. There is a disposition to sell distant hemp. April and June shipments are at .£35. A few inquiries are being made by speculative buyers for cocksfoot seed. Quotations are normal. New Zealand, 171 b standard, from 42s to 455.
