AT HALF-MAST.
(To the Editor of tiie Times). Sir, —At the risk of being thought obtrusive, I, as an old soldier, would like to state that I do not agree with the kindly-meant hoisting of flags at half-mast in Gisborne on account of our brave lads at the front. When the sad news of death was received, I would, in solemn sympathy with the relatives, have had the flags half-mast-ed for an hour, but no longer. Then they would have floated from the topmost peaks, and the streets would have resounded with stirring martial music. It makes one’s blood tingle with pride to read in your journal how the New Zealand lads held their post and thus saved the situation. Rather than mourn I think we should shout with joy. What a glorious death it was ! It may have a marked effect in the termination of the war, aad thus be the means of saving hundreds of lives.—l am, etc., ADMIRER.
