King Edward at Kempton Park saw h s horse Ambush 11. win the Stand Steeplechase. Ambush also recently won the Grand National Steeplechase. Harold Apted has been sentenced to death for murder of a little girl of the name of O’Rourke, near Tunbridge, on New Year’s Eve. The prisoner is 20 years of age. The jury in their verdict gave a recommendation to mercy owing to the youth of the prisoner. Apted maintained an impassive demeanor, and after sentence was passed he confessed his guilt. Twenty-five members of the House of Commons are down with influenza. •Mr Balfour is one of the victims, and
is improving. Earl Denbigh, has been appointed King Edward’s special envoy to congratulate the Pope on the attainment of his jubilee. The newspapers support Mr Copeland in favor of a steady supply of horses from Australia.
The Midwife Registration Bill lias been read a second time in the House of Commons.
A Court reception will be held on March 14th at Buckingham Palace. There has been no such reception for several reigns. Mr Samuel Montague, President of the Decimal Association, is delighted at the prospect of the establishment of tiie system. MELBOURNE, Feb. 28.
Dickson, the University accountant, received additional sentences on other charges, which were cumulative, totalling five years. The duty on Oregon pme has been reduced to 6d per 100 superficial feet, the Government being defeated by 13. On the item undressed timber, sizes less than 7 x 21 inches, the duty has been reduced from 2s fib to Is 6d. The other duties are unaltered. SYDNEY, Feb. 28. ,
q’he Federal Government approve of placing two thousand pounds on the Estimates towards sending a team to Bisley in July next. Steps are being taken to secure a team.
