Captain Tucker said that Mr McLeod was a reliable man, and he did not think he would make a mistake. The first step was to accept the tender. Mr Whinray asked what was the Eak - mincer’s estimate. . Captain Tucker : That will come later

on; Mr Whinray: I think it comes on now ; it could be taken in committee. Mr Hepburn : It is quite right ; the members know the Engineer’s estimate. Captain Tucker: Well, hand it round (which was done). Mr Sievwright: That is not so very bad then. The Chairman : Evidently some are extraordinarily high. Ho moved that Mr Sellars’ tender be accepted. Mr Hepburn seconded tho amendment. He considered that a serious error had been made. Mr Sievwright: It is the most extraordinary position I ever heard of. . The motion was carried, there being for Messrs Tucker, Sievwright, and the Chairman, and Messrs Whinray and Hepburn being against the motion. Mr Sievwright said his view was that Mr McLeod knew what he was doing, and would save a great deal by his own work. Captain Tucker took s similar view. Mr Henburn asked if in the event of a •mistake would the deposit of £2OO bo The Chairman : That depends on the E Ttwas resolved that the Chairman and another member be a committee to complete the contract on behalf of the Board.
