STRANGE PERSECUTION.
Middletown, N. Y., Jan. 4. Acid thrown in the face of Nelhe Taylor, the pretty housekeeper at the Columbus Hotel, one night in Juno last has resulted in the closing of the hotel. The landlord, Charles Coleman, has surrendered his lease and gone to farming. Jealousy is supposed to have been the motive that prompted the acid which was done by two masked women, who called Miss Taylor to the back of the hotel. They were tracked to the vaid of the First Presbyterian Church, which adjoins the hotel, and there all trace of them was lost. A month Inter a second attempt was made to disfigure Miss Taylor. She was wary and did not ”0 to the door herself, but a servant who did was slightly burned on the cheek by the acid-thrower. „r Coleman bought three bulldogs - ™° “ which he kept in the back y« d and the other in the hall of the hotel. They pre vented any further attempts against the housekeeper, but the notoriety given ins house proved fatal to its prosperity, and Its business fell off almost entirely.
