A provisional patent has been granted to Mr E. A. Slack for improved dental suction cells.

Mr W. G. Foster, General Manager of the Assets Board, is at present visiting Gisborne on business in connection with the sale of native lands advertised for to-day. In connection with the railway line, Messrs Yickerman, Armstrong, and Jeffs, of tho Public Works Department, are journeying as far as the Motu bridge. The Observer states: Mr D. Thompson, the owner of the steeplechaser Evening Wonder, which won several races at the recent Takapuna meeting, has settled down in Wellington as the proprietor of the Albert Hotel, a popular house in which Aucklanders love to foregather. During the last twelve months, the Albert has been admirably conducted by Mr W. G. Pearce, a gentleman from Brisbane, who is not only a prince of good fellows but also one of the best hotel managers that this colony has seen. He returhed to Sydney last week, but, after the lapse of a few months, will probably make his home in New Zealand.

Harold Montgomery, who has been appointed head of the Government Tourist Department- in Auckland, ought to fiii the position very capably. He has followed several pursuits m Auckland, but is chiefly known in connection with journalism, having been for some time associated with the literary staff of the defunct Evening Bell. He was also secretary of the Auckland Jubilee Celebration, and in these and other capacities has acquired a great deal of useful knowledge that will be serviceable to him in his new position. Mr -M
