THE PLAGUE.

By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Brisbane, Feb. 24. Russell, tho brother of a former patient, has boon affected with plague. MORE CASES. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, Feb. 24. A woman named Campbell at Woolloomooloo, and Sally Booth and Ada Loe, actresses at the Criterion Hotel, have been attacked by plague. Misses Church and Gardiner and Mrs Gardiner have been discharged cured.

Tho Auckland Star states :—People are no longer excused from protecting themselves against the plague by ignorance of tho origin of this loathsome disease, or a blind fatalistic belief that it is a dispensation of Providence against which it is idle for man to struggle. No human ailment is more amenable to preventative measures. It is a pestilence originating in filth and disseminated by vermin, and if every householder in Auckland employed the means at his command to cleanse his premises of both he would effectually protect himself and do his quota towards the protection of the city. The municipal authorities unfortunately have conspicuously failed in their duty by neglecting to provide a proper system of drainage; there is the more reason, therefore, why they shall do everything that lies in their power now to abate nuisances, among tho most conspicuous of these being the foul, open, evil-smelling gullies which still fester in the sun in several puts of the city.
