A chess match has been arranged between five aside teams representing the Australian Commonwealth and the House of Commons. It begins on April IG. The Australians have secured first move. Mr Bonar Law, member for Blackfreds, will captain the House of Commons team. He lias offered the champion a cup for the match, to be held in perpetuity. The Times has undertaken to pay the expenses of cabling the moves of the match.

The Federal House negatived the Government proposal to remove sulphate of copper from the free list. A strength sufficient will shortly be produced locally to meet all requirements. The Government have consented to consider a suggestion to make liquid fuel free of duty. Cement uas been fixed at' ninepeuce per ewt., and on earthenware, brownwarc, and stoneware the duty is 20 per cent.
