The Premier Banqueted.
[BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] Westport, last night. The Premier was entertained at a public banquet in the Victoria Theatre to-night. During the course of his speech, he said the statesmen in the Old Country were now only too glad to get an expression of opinion on colonial questions from colonial statesmen. He chvolt at length upon the benefits to the Empire by the inclusion of the Cook groups in New Zealand boundaries. Speaking of the AngloJapanese treaty, he said it would be of great benefit to New Zealand. The navies of the colonies, Japan, and Britain’s Eastern fleets could command the seas, and protect the nation’s commerce. In connection with the Cardiff mine, ho said the Government intended to have a tramway constructed to tho coal area at onc-e, and they would probably soon see it worked as a State mine.
