HON. J CARROLL.

A WEARISOME PROGRAMME

[Special to Times.| Auckland, last night,

A special message from Wellington states that a deputation representing tho natives of the North Island waited on the Hon. J. Carroll, Native Minister, last night, with a request that ho will pay a visit to their kaingas in order to assist to guide them in the working of tho Maori Councils Act, sanitary matters, water supplies, and other proposals generally affecting tho Maori race. There is a feeling in the southern districts that they aro not receiving their fair share of attention. They claim the privilege of conferring with tho Native Minister on fitting occasions regarding their own interests, especially recent legislation. Mr Carroll, in reply, disclaimed any desire to show partiality to any section of the native race, his object being to improve tho condition of the whole of the tribes. Ho will, if possible, visit the South Island and other meetings before March 20th. He will then attend the meeting at the East Coast. He proceeds thence to the North. Ho has rnado arrangements, subject to necessary alterations, to meet the native tribes north of Auckland, to go up tho Wanganui Rivor to bo present at important Maori gatherings, and at Dannevirke and other places. He will also attend a great meeting in tho Waikato, convened by Mahuta Maoris, and will meet the Ngatimaniapotos, the Ureweras, and other tribes. To carry out this programme) will involve many wearisome journeys in rough country, unprovided with roads and traversed by Maori tracks.
