BOROUGH COUNCIL

The fortnightly meeting of the Council was hold last night, there being present: The Mayor (Mr Tovvniey), and Crs Kennedy, Miller, Harding, Whinray, Jones, Mason, and Bright. An apology was received from Cr Lysliar, who was out of town. Messrs Gamiuau and Co., Dannovirke, wrote, in reply to the Council, quoting rough heart of totara at 20s f.o.b. Gisborne wharf.

In reply to the Mayor, the Town Clerk said that Messis Clayton Bros, bad said l boy had 2000 ft, which they would cut to any length, but they had not yet sent in a price. The Mayor said that if they could got it locally they should do so, and it was agreed that quotations be obtained locally by the Overseer for next meeting. Mr G. B. Oman applied for permission to cut down two trees in fiont of his premises. It was stated that the trees were two puriris, arid the Mayor and Crs Harding and Kennedy said it was a great pity if they had to removo those nice trees. Cr Miller said that if they were in front of his place he would not care to have them blocking up the place. Cr Mason thought it would be a great mistake to remove those trees.

Cr Harding said that if the trees were a block to anything there might be some good reason for it. The Mayor said that the Overseer should see Mr Oman and ascertain if it was necessary that the trees should bo removed. That suggestion was agreed to, it being stated that it would only mean a little delay. Major Winter, in reply to the Council, wrote offering to complete all surveys, plans, tracings, ete., both for the Public Works Department and the Native Land Court in accordance with the Government regulations for .£53. The Mayor said he considered the price a very reasonable one, and ho proposed that it be accepted. tlr Whinray seconded the motion, considering the price reasonable. The motion was carried in the form that Major Winter be instructed to complete the work at the prioe offered. P. Bailey, of Palmerston North, having boon informed that the Council required a competent man with a thorough knowledge of asphalting, concrot-ing, tarring, etc., offered his services.—To be informed that there was not at present any vacancy. Mr Chas. Evans wrote asking the Council to have the drain from Cook street towards the western boundary of the township cleaned out and deepened. Ha urged that the water should bo carried through Stanley street, aud emptying into the river near the brewery.

The Overseer said he did not see how the water could be taken via the brewery. The most effective way to remedy Mr Evans’ complaint would be to cut a drain down Cook street.

Or Whinray said they wanted to avoid cpen-drains as much as possible as they were a big expense. It was agreed that the Overseer should report on the subject. The Overseer reported:—l have the honor to report to you on the following : Since last meeting, the work has been confined a good deal to patching the roads and general repairs. Only slight progress has been made, with asphalting, though every opportunity has been taken advantage of. Stone contract : Very littlo progress has been made since last meeting with this contract. Only a few yards of stone have been delivered, the road to tho quarry being closed through wet weather. As authorised at last meeting, I have prepared an estimate for tho footbridge at the side of tho Turanganui bridge. This work must necessarily be as light as possible, as the present bridge is too high out of the ground to stand_ much weight being put on to it. I have, therefore, considered tho lightest structure possible, combined with strength, to meet tho requirements. I would, therefore, propose an angle iron framework, to be bolted to the joist and the upper cord of the bridge, as we cannot stay the framework from the lower cord —that would interfere with the screwing up of the bridge. We must then be confined to one cord only, and the framework practically must find its own stay. I will give you two designs for the frame for the main portion of the bridge. The portion with overhead cords will require an overhead stay, as the present stays will have to be taken away, and the joist that extends through will carry the decking of the footbridge in this position. No. 1 I estimate at 12s 6d, and No. 2at £US 12s 6d. No. 2, I think, is tho best and strongest design, being fixed so as to force itself together with the weight. Day labor as per voucher.

Crs Jones, Whinray, and the Mayor thought the cost of the footbridge would De so high that it could not be entertained at present. That view was adopted bv the Council. ' The Mayor reported as to the condemning ot the fire engine boiler. The boiler at the Gisborne Freezing Works had been temporarily put up. Telegrams had been sent asking prices as to a new boiler, but information had been asked as to what was required. The boiler they had was the mest suitable that could be got in the district. They might give a trial of the boiler.

In reply to Cr Jones, the Mayor said that Messrs Davys and King said the price was reasonable. Mr F. J. Shelton wrote to the Mayor that in reply to an enquiry re boiler he had submitted the matter to Mr Davys, who stated that JUO was a fair price to ask, and at that price he (Mr Shelton) was willing to dispose of the boiler to the Council. Cr Whinray moved that the Mayor’s action be approved of. He thought they should buy the boiler, as it would be as cheap as hiriug it. Cr Jones seconded the motion, and it was resolved to purchase the boiler at the prico offered.
