George Bonnor, the mighty Australian hitter, while batting in a match in England, made a magnificent drive, which was splendidly taken by a fieldsman right on the boundary. As the batsman walked to the pavilion, a friend sympathetically remarked “ Hard luck, Bon.” “Not at all,” replied the Australian giant; it was bad play. Nine men out of ten would have bit that ball for five ; I made the mistake of simply blocking it. A companion story to this is told of J. J. Lyons, the famous South Australian smiter. He and Reedman were together at the wickets in a certain match. Lyons got on to a ball, and his partner started running, but the big man remarked: “ Don’t trouble about running, Jack ; 1 hit that one.”
