The Daily Telegraph states tnat Canada intends to lay a cable to Groat Britain, rendering tho Pacific line independent of the Atlantic cables.
Government supporters anticipate that Sir Michael Hicks-Beach will not require to propose serious additional taxation. Lord Rosebery’s recent speeches have accentuated the divisions in the Opposition ranks.

Mr Barton, speaking at the war demonstration, repudiated the scorn and criticism on the loyalty and good faith of tho Federal Ministry because a representative was unable to be present at the Sydney demonstration. The question was did we approve of the lines laid down by tho Imperial Government after the war was over. Speaking of the proposal to grant autonomy, he said he had not yet learned that what was good enough for the Australian was not good enough for tho Boer, or that a rebel was to be treated better than a loyal subject. AVe had no right now to urge Great Britain to consent to terms which might imperil the future dominion of the Empire in South Africa. Arrived : The Brisbane, from Kaipara. Hobart, Feb. 18.
The AVakanui resumed her voyage to New Zealand at 4 p.m. to-day. The local passengers were ianded after being vaccinated.
Sydney, Feb. 18. Sailed, at 2.15 p.m., Tho Ventura, for New Zealand. A man named Hildon has been stricken with plague at an hotel in the same block as His Majesty’s Theatre. The Federal Contingent embarked today. There was no public demonstration. The arrangements for tho procession were cancelled at the last moment. During the march to the wharf a horse which Trooper Grey was leading bolted. The halter twisted on the trooper’s wrist. Ho was dragged and died from the injuries. AVith the exception of Howell, the nine men previously mentioned, also Carter and Armstrong, have been definitely selected as members of the Australian cricket team to visit England.
