She stales that her husband would rather die than surrender. She would sooner bury him than see him surrender. She expressed a wish for a floured house like General Smut's wife.

Piet Wessels’ commando has been pushed across the railway at A'ictoria West. It is officially announced that Pretoria remains the seat of Government of the Transvaal colony. Cornet ATmder.vesthuizen was amongst the killed at Zuikerboschrand. In the House of Commons Lord Stanleypromised to lay the army moat contracts on the table of the House. Out of 114,370 persons in the Boer concentration camps in January, 169 men, 587 women, and 1049 children died, being the lowest average sinco July last. A committee of women under Mrs Fawcett, widow of the Right Hon. Henry Fawcett, appointed by Government in July to inquire into the condition of the camps, recommended that increased comforts and precautions bo provided. Sir A. Milner agreed to carry out the recommendations regardless of cost. The Boers of Theron’s commando have been driven north of A’anrhynsdorp. A. McKay, of tho Sixth New Zealand Mounteds, has died of enteric fever at Wakkerstroom.
