NAPIER NEWS.
A CLOSE PROFESSION.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, last night.
A case of considerable interest to land and commission agents was heard at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when a local commission agent was charged, at the instance of the Law Society, with having acting as a conveyancer by preparing a lease on agreement to lease, he not being a barrister or solicitor. The defendant admitted having prepared the lease, but explained that he had made no charge for doing so, his account being for leasing the place, and was at the rate of 5 per cent, upon the rent for six months as allowed by the Chamber of Commerce. The solicitor for the Law Society stated that defendant was still liable for having acted as a conveyancer, even though no charge had been made. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £1 and costs, explaining that the defendant was liable to a fine of £SO, but as it was the first case of the kind heard in the colony, and as a heavy penalty was not pressed for, only a small fine would be imposed. VALUATIONS. The valuation list for the Borough of Napier for the year 1902 is £§6,521, as against £85,381 last year, and an inorease of £ll9O on the last year’s total.
