AUCKLAND SPECIAL.

LOST OVERBOARD. [Special to TrMES.| Auckland, last night. Charles Lilbury, the grand leading bass of the Musgrove Opera Company, who visited Auckland last year, is reported to have been lost overboard from the steamer on which he and Signora Cecila Lorraine and Signor Salvi and other members of the company were returning to Europe. HOISTING OF THE FLAG. A feature of ceremony connected with the hoisting of the New Zealand Ensign at the Native school at Wainana, inland from Whakatane, was unique. Most of the elder Maori men present had fought against the flag they were honoring. Te Whin, who performed the ceremony, was one of Te Kooti’s lieutenants, and bears marks of three severe woundß received at the hands of Her Majesty’s troops. He fought from Galatea to Gisborne in all the leading engagements. In his speech’ he expressed his pleasure in hoisting the symbol of the unity of the Maori and Pakeha. A NATIVE MEETING.

A wire from Wellington to-day states that the Hon. Mr Carroll has returned after attending a Native meeting at Otaki last night for the purpose of explaining the Maori Council Act. In removing the objections of the Natives ho discussed the question the greater part of two days, when the Natives accepted the Act. They elected as Chairnian Pita, Tipua, grandson of Honi Taipua, formerly M.H.R. for the Western Maori district. Everything passed off satisfactorily.
