-The railway employes have preseated Mr Jeffs, engineer in charge of the railway worts, with a handsome silver mounted pipe, as a token of the esteem in which they hold him. Blr Wells, who succeeded Mr R. Cole as second assistant teacher at the Gisborne school, entered upon his duties V esterday^ Captain H. Peterson, of the scow Alert-, was formerly captain of the Wfcakapai, and left the latter vessel only five weeks before she came to her disastrous end at the East Cape. Sir Joseph Ward leaves Wellington u>r Auckland to-day, On his way to New Plymouth he will open the new Mastertou railway station and the Feilding and Inglewood post offices, and on arrival at Oneliunga on Friday Horning will open the new post office a,; ‘- later in the day will perform a similar ceremony in connection with the new post office at Hamilton, A very pretty wedding took place at the Wesleyan Church yesterday afterthe contracting parties being Blr Herbert Henry Hancox, a member of the local police force, and formerly of Auckland, and Miss Jessie Godfrey, of Auckland. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. B. F. Rothwell. The bride, who was given away by her father, was charmingly attired in cream lustre with c: thodox wreath and veil, and carried a very pretty bouquet. She was attended by her little sisters, who were prettily attired in white. Blr L. Whiteside acted as best man. The happy couple were the recipients of many handsome pre- ! sents. from their friends in Auckland. During the recent visit of the Duke and Duchess of York and Cornwall to the colony Rangiuia, the only Maori ] nianiste and -otalist on the platform in the colonies, received special command to travel by Royal train from Christchurch to Dunedin and hack, and was present at all Royal functions held in Dunedin. Whilst in the Royal train Rangiuia by request sang in Maori “ Home Sweet Home.”
