SUPREME COURT.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, last night. At the Supreme Court this afternoon Joseph Mulligan, for theft of a portmanteau belonging to a commercial traveller, was sentenced to nine months. Proceedings in two other charges against him were stayed. Harry Smith and Arthur Walsh, for assault and robbery, were sentenced to nine months each ; Mary Joyce, for theft, to 12 months ; James Tucker, horse-stealing, three years ; Geo. Mumford, bribing witness in Ariadne yacht case, six months, to bo concurrent with the present sentence for casting away the vessel. Two cases, one of indecent assault and the other of arson, will be taken to-morrow, and these will conclude the criminal session.
Napier, last night. At the Supreme Court to-day Archibald Fairbairn was sentenced to two years for horse stealing. Hori Piriki, for the same offence, received a similar sentence. Iverana Ropita, a Maori, was found guilty of attempting to carnally know a girl under 12 years of age, and was remanded to Wednesday for sentence. Mita Renata Pura, a Maori, was found guilty of indecently assaulting a Native girl at Rata Flat, near Fordell, in December last, and sentence was deferred until Wednesday. John Kinnaird, for breaking and entering and stealing at Matamatu, was sentenced to one year.
