GISBORNE SCHOOL PICNIC

A most successful picnic in connection with the Gisborne Public School was held in the Recreation Ground yesterday. The weather, although showery in the morning, turned out line in the afternoon, and the attendance was very satisfactory, about fourteen hundred persons—four hundred adults and a thousand children —being present. The children assembled on the ground at about eleven o’clock, and preparations were immediately made for lunch. The committee had fixed up a I marquee and a number of tents, and had made ample arrangements for catering. The Union Company also kindly provided a number of swings for the amusement of | the children, and all tbo arrangemen worked out with perfect smoothness, pleasant day’s outing resulting. Where f many volunteers, in addition to the pien committee, assisted to make the day a enjoyable one for the children, it ina seem invidious to mention names. W must, however, be excused in referring t some of the leading spirits in charge c different departments. First of all, i word of praise is due to the Chairman Mr A. F. Matthews, and Mr G. Subbs secretary and treasurer, for tho enthusias tie manner in which they worked to mak< the picnic a success. They were mosl assidious in their efforts to promoto the pleasure and comfort of all present, and the success of the picnic was in no small measure due to them. A.lll bridge, W. Morgan, Darton, Wildish, Nisbett, James Drown, A. T. Hookey, and others took chargo of the grounds and sports, and got tho ovents off in a most satisfactory manner. Tho swimming races were superinteded by Mr F. Crammond, who acted as starter, Mr Gaudin, who officiated as judge, and Messrs Sawyer, Mason, Darton, and others. The swimming events were full of interest, and there were several close and exciting finishes. In case of an accident, several boats were in attendance. The greasy boom event caused a great deal of amusement, and it was a long time before any ot the competitors reached the end of the polo.
