BRITISH AND FOREIGNERS.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, last night. At the City Council to-night Mr Hanna moved that a clause be inserted in the Council contracts prohibiting the use of material manufactured in countries hostile to the Empire, and calling upon the Premier to pass a preferential tariff. The motion was lost. Mr Baurne said he objected to the wording of the motion, and he gave notice of his intention to move that the Council heartily approves of the proposal to bring in a preferential tariff in favor of the British Empire. This will probably be carried. The Mayor intends to take preliminary steps to suitably recognise the Premier’s Imperial services before his departure for London.
