AUCKLAND SPECIAL

(Special to Times.) Auckland, last night

Visitors from far and near aro taking advantage this summer of a visit to Lako Takapuna, which is noted for its natural grandeur as the best in the world. It is so conveniently situated a trip that Gisborne visitors should avail themselves of it. English visitors there last Sunday were particularly taken up with the place, one distinguished visitor stating that it r surpasses anything of its kind in London. Several Gisbornites have been spending a short holiday at the Lake, residing at the popular Lako Hotel. Gisborniteß speak in glowing terms of the hospitality and kindness of the proprietor, Mr Harry WhitJaw, towards them. PERSON AL.

Mr Thomas Gaudin, brother of Mr W. J. Gaudin, of the Gisborne Times, was thrown from his horse yesterday, and

broke bis collar-bone. Lieutonant Ted. Rees, of Gisborne, is acting-quartermaster with the Ninth Contingent. Mr Neale, veterinary surgeon, of Gisborne, is to leave for Whangarei this week to purchaso throe hundred horses for the Government, to be used by the Ninth Contingent. Mr Ernest Bouillon, late oi the oranch of the Bank of New Zealand at Gisborno, and Auckland, is leaving the Cambridge branch of the Bank of New Zealand, to become lay reader at St. Andrew’s Church there for a couple of years, during which time he will study for the Church. The congregation will find him £6O per annum for two years. Mr Bouillon was educated at Gisborne school. One year he was successful in winning the gold medal for dux, presented by the Caledonian Society. Photos of the Gisborne bowlers who attended the bowling tournament at Wellington appear in to-day’s Auckland Graphic. Many names have been suggested in connection with the command of the Ninth Contingent, but it is stated on good authority that the probabilities are that the contingent on arrival in South Africa will be placed under the charge of Colonel Porter (of Gisborne), now in command of the Seventh, whose term expires in May next.
