AUCKLAND SPECIAL.
THE TAKAPUNA FATALITY,
(Special to Times.)
Auckland, last night. The death of poor Harry Berry through Rufus coming to grief in the Steeplechase last Saturday is the most regrettable aflair that ever occurred on a racecourse. Whilst poor Berry was lying in his unconscious state he is believed to have been jumped on by the horse following Rufus. Berry was a Thames young man of about 25 years of age. Local sportsmen speak of him in most glowing terms as a man and a rider. BLe was a happy-go-lucky young man, always full of fun, a game rider, and straight-forward and honest. Indeed, many a sorrowing heart left the racecourse on Saturday, especially those who wituessed the ghastly scene. Frank Ross, well known in Auckland, had engaged Berry, and Berry’s loss has made it all the more sad. Berry was known to all Gisborne sports, he having ridden Puriri in hurdles recently in Gisborne. MR NOBLE-CAMPELL.
Mr S. A. Noble-Carnpbell, late of Gisborne, arrived from Sydney to-night bv the Elingamite. He left London on the 13th December, by the s.s. China, and has gained great experience in the art of dentistry in London. Mr Campbell leaves for Gisborne to-morrow, en route to Masterton.
